Moonlit Hawk 2

Moonlit Hawk 2 is based on the same two-panel folding screen, estimated to date from approximately three hundred years ago. Koshu Endo photographed the historic painting and digitally restored traces of damage and deterioration, allowing the form and presence of the hawk to re-emerge.

The moon placed behind it was photographed by Endo in the present day. A painted image inherited from the past and a photographic image of contemporary light are brought into a single visual field. Rather than erasing the distance between their origins, the work makes that temporal distance visible.

Once favoured by samurai as an emblem of strength and disciplined vision, the hawk now confronts a moon seen through a modern optical medium. The work forms a layered image of time in which preservation, transformation, and renewed perception coexist.

《Moonlit Hawk 2》も、約三百年前の作と推定される二曲一隻の《架鷹図》屏風をもとに制作しています。遠藤湖舟は屏風を撮影し、傷や経年による劣化をデジタル上で修復することで、鷹の姿と存在感を現代に再び立ち現れさせました。

その背後に置かれた月は、遠藤が現在の時間の中で実際に撮影したものです。過去から受け継がれた絵画の像と、現代の光を記録した写真の像が、一つの画面に重なります。本作は両者の時間差を消すのではなく、むしろその隔たりを可視化しています。

鷹は、力と統御された視線の象徴として武士に好まれました。その鷹が、現代の光学的な視線によって捉えられた月と向き合うことで、保存、変容、再知覚が共存する、時間の重層が形成されています。
