Moonlit Hawk 1

This work originates from a two-panel folding screen depicting a hawk on a perch, estimated to have been painted approximately three hundred years ago. After acquiring the screen, Koshu Endo photographed it and digitally restored the image, removing visible damage and deterioration accumulated over time.

Behind the hawk, Endo placed an image of the moon that he had photographed himself. The work thus brings together two acts of seeing separated by centuries: that of the unknown painter who observed and depicted the hawk, and that of Endo observing the moon through photography.

Hawks, admired for their strength, dignity, and keen vision, were particularly favoured by the samurai class. In this work, the powerful figure of the hawk emerges again within contemporary light, creating a collaboration across time between the earlier painter and the present-day artist.

約三百年前に描かれたと推定される、鷹を描いた二曲一隻の《架鷹図》屏風を入手し、撮影した作品です。撮影後、画面に残る傷や経年劣化をデジタル上で修復しました。

鷹の背後には、遠藤湖舟自身が撮影した月を配置しています。そこには、かつて鷹を観察し描いた無名の絵師の視線と、写真によって月を捉えた遠藤の視線という、三百年という時を隔てた二つの「見る行為」が重なっています。

勇壮さ、威厳、鋭い視力の象徴である鷹は、武士たちに好まれた画題でした。本作では、過去に描かれた鷹が現代の光の中に再び現れ、当時の絵師と遠藤による、時間を超えた協業が生まれています。
